Help your kids find the silver lining

James Daily, founding partner of Daily Law Group, is a self-made millionaire (Entrepreneur.com). He learned from his parents that there was no problem he could not solve because there was always something positive to take from a setback.

“My parents taught me to be grateful and find the silver lining, even if you have nothing or are facing pain, loss, or failure. After my father lost his job at one point, they never let on that they were struggling financially.

“They taught me how to meet both success and failure and to face challenges with gratitude, humour, and abundance instead of scarcity. With that mindset, there is nothing you can’t be or do, and no problem you can’t solve. That’s how you pick up the pieces after failure and reinvest, reinvent, reshape, and succeed. At 83 years old, my dad is in a lot of pain today, but he still reminds us that everything is ‘fine and dandy’ and there are others with bigger problems.

“You just need to count your blessings to see how rich you are.”

Teach kids to find the silver linings

Life’s not always rainbows and butterflies. Sometimes, it feels more like stepping on LEGOs in the dark – ouch! But here’s a little secret: finding the positives, even in the crummy stuff, can be our superpower. It’s like wearing x-ray goggles that spot the hidden goodies in our day, no matter how well they’re hiding.

Think about it. When we stumble on a LEGO (ouch, again!), we might learn to switch on the light next time, right? Or at the very least, we become the world-champion at the one-foot hop! That’s the magic of spotting the silver lining. It’s not about pretending stepping on LEGOs doesn’t hurt (because, boy, it does!), but it’s about discovering what we’ve learned, how tough we are, and how we can laugh about it later.

By making a habit of looking for the good stuff in every situation, we become like the world’s greatest treasure hunters. We find hope where others see despair, and we see opportunities where others see dead-ends. Sure, bad news can feel like a raincloud over our heads, but hey, don’t rainclouds also make the flowers grow? So, even when life throws us a curveball, we’re ready to hit a home run. After all, every oops is an opportunity to learn, and every boo-boo, a chance to be brave. So, let’s strap on those x-ray goggles and go find some silver linings.
